My local, family owned hardware store & lumber yard would be my pick. They have many parts for older fixtures in stock and will take the time to help you find the correct part. The big box home center... not so much.
Ace Hardware stores can be helpful as well as plumbing supply stores.
The home improvement stores have the books and parts but don't offer much help.
If your house was built around 1960.... that could be American Standard or Gerber.
You need to count the splines where the handle attaches.
Measure the overall length of stem not including the washer and washer screw.
Measure the diameter of the broach (spline)
You'll need the stems and probably the seats that go into the valve body.
Post a picture of the stem next to a ruler.
I am renovating my lower bath ( on concrete floor) and the cast iron flange has corroded.
I was planning to cut it and snug fit a PVC Flange inside the cast iron pipe
Talked to a plumber I know and he said it need to be iron flange sealed with molten lead.
I am thinking using epoxy glue ( the liquid weld type) around the PVC flange and insert it inside cast iron pipe.
Is it a bad idea ? Is the plumber right, or just selling his business ( molten lead means I sure need a plumber)
Hello,e hose
My kid bought a house and it needs a bit of work. No big deal but I'm encountering one thing I've got a question about. The previous owners had a small washer/dryer stack in a laundry area. Apparently, they had the washer drain hose go out through an adjacent bathroom sink drain. The hose was attached to a rubber connector with aircraft-type hose clamps.
Said kid bought a LG combo washer/dryer and I'm wondering which of the two options for drainage I should consider - space is at a premium:
I could install the drain hose using a cheater valve directly into the bathroom drain pipe as it was before except there'd be that cheater valve, or;
I could install some type of standpipe for a drain - again, it would need to go into that bathroom sink drain but there'd be a j-trap. The main concern is providing air for the drain so it doesn't siphon.
Suggestions? I'm not thrilled about either. Thanks!
