How do I take the stem out

Need to fix this faucet. Removed the screw at Center and I was expecting the cover to pull out, but there is no way it is coming out. Thoughts ?

Do you mean the handle ?
You need to get the handle off first.

You need a faucet handle pull tool...... available in any home improvement or plumbing store.
Faucet handle puller

Thanks pjmax. Got the handle out. But the stem is too stubborn.

I tried to turn the nut but not sure if that is right way to go
Suggestions please?

Never mind. A generous amount of WD40 and a pipe wrench did it. Now the most difficult thing is to find the right replacement for this antiquated stem

My local, family owned hardware store & lumber yard would be my pick. They have many parts for older fixtures in stock and will take the time to help you find the correct part. The big box home center... not so much.

Ace Hardware stores can be helpful as well as plumbing supply stores.
The home improvement stores have the books and parts but don't offer much help.

If your house was built around 1960.... that could be American Standard or Gerber.

You need to count the splines where the handle attaches.
Measure the overall length of stem not including the washer and washer screw.
Measure the diameter of the broach (spline)

You'll need the stems and probably the seats that go into the valve body.
Post a picture of the stem next to a ruler.

Got it. It is a Sterling.

A local plumbing supply store have been extremely helpful in locating the part.

I just saved a boatload of money that plumber was asking for.
