Adding a laundry tub

I am in Ocala Florida and have a standard in-the-wall washer box with hot and cold water and a 2" drain for the clothes washer. It is in a 2x4 stud wall finished with drywall. It is in an outside wall of my garage and I assume it is insulated.

I want install a built-in cabinet with sink along side the washer and tap into the existing washer plumbing and conceal everything inside the wall. It is about 28" from the center of the washer box to the center of the sink. I plan to use PEX for the water lines and 1-1/2 PVC for the drain.

Before I tear into the wall, are there any words of advice, tips or any code issues I need to be aware.

You will need to see how things are plumbed inside the wall before you know for sure. You will have to make sure that your new sink ties into the drain below the trap for the washer. Then depending on the distances you may need to add a vent for the sink.

The trap for the washer is below grade. What makes the difference whether the drain water comes from the sink or the washer?

Does 28" distance require a vent?

You can not double trap. That's the easy part of code to understand. When the trap is not immediately below the drain you run into running trap issue. It is pretty clear that a trap cannot be located more than 24" below the drain. The horizontal distance away will probably cause you troubles. A remote or running trap can be permitted for pedestal sinks but because of its obscure nature for something as boring as a laundry sink it is nothing but trouble.

Then you have venting to consider. 28" from what to where??? Yes, the devil is in the details.

Add a laundry tub

Here are some details. The 2" washer standpipe and 1-1/2 sink drain are in a 2x4 stud wall. The sink and p-trap (if needed) would be along side the washer. I only assume that a washer trap is below the garage floor about 12 inches (I see water there).

Not sure how old the house is, but under-floor traps haven't been allowed for a couple decades (other than fixtures that require it like showers/baths). Not saying yours doesn't have one, but I would assume/hope it doesn't.

As Dane mentioned, you can't have a double trap. So if you do in fact have an under-floor trap, it's not going to work to code.

This is the proper way to install a tub and washer standpipe.

Notice that the washer needs its own vent since the tub drain is installed above it, turning it into an non-code-compliant wet vent (without its own vent)

The house was built in 1991. Thanks for your input.
