Question

the shower spout leaks when shut off; it is not even a drip but a constant stream; it is a single ball-type handle and I don't know the brand. could this be a problem with the spout itself of with the handle?

Cool

It is problem with the single-handle faucet, not the shower head.
Look in the "Repair/Fix-It" section above under "Plumbing" until you find the type that you have, and it will have an illustrated how-to fix it.
If it is a Delta, it is easy to fix.
Good Luck!
