1920's house with mystery pipes......

I am sure there are some guys on here that know this. Could there be any reason why this copper water pipe has this loop in it?? Would like to remove it to install softener....

Also: we found a couple galvanized water pipes in a ceiling, assuming they have to be replaced??

Thanks!

Domestic water or hot water hydronic heating? Where do the two pipes come from/go to?

Replacing old galvanized pipe is a good idea. They are probably blocked inside by now even if the joints are not leaking.

We can see a hot air furnace.
That looks like a loop for a water heater.... especially since it's near the furnace.

You'd need to determine if it's a hot or cold pipe.
What do you currently have for water heating ?

Pictures of the larger area could be helpful.

In newer homes plumbers will install a similar loop for the purpose of installing a water softener in the future.

it is cold, but is in a web - wouldn't work for softener - think it will be going away
