Question

I JUST BOUGHT A HOUSE THAT PASSED THE HOME INSPECTION WITH FLYING COLORS...BUT AFTER GETTING IN THE HOUSE...I HAVE LEARNED THAT AFTER RUNNING THE HOT WATER (EX: SHOWER) MY HOT WATER HEATER MAKES A POPPING NOISE. IT SOUNDS ALMOST AS IF SOMEONE IS POPPING A BALLOON (BUT NOT AS LOUD). ANYONE HAVE AN EXPLANATION? IT IS A GAS HOT WATER HEATER!

Hello LVDLPHINS and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site.

The popping noise is called percolating. Which means there is an excessive amount of sediment on the bottom of the tank internally.

Check the archives within this forum for instructions on how to FLUSH a water heater and other posts on this topic.

FYI:
If the home was inspected and the appliances are covered on a warranty, contact the insurance carrier.

Consider that the inspector didn't actually run enough water through the tank to determine if there was a problem. Fact is, it may have only been a visually inspection for code compliance and a check for proper burner and venting operation, which only takes minutes.

Regards & Good Luck
