I am trying to connect two cast iron 4" pipes together. The first pipes flange has a rubber gasket that the second pipe inserts into. I guess this is the new way to connect these pipes without having to solder. My problem is that the rubber gasket fits so tight that I can't make the connection. Is there a trick to using these gaskets ? I tried using axle grease. Still couldn't get the second pipe inserted into the gasket/flange of the first pipe.

Cool

This sounds like a "tyte-seal" donut for connecting two pieces of cast iron drain pipe.
You have the right idea. You need to lube it.
Try Vaseline or petroleum jelly.
Good Luck!
