Water heater timer switch ON/OFF schedule

Question

I just installed a water heater timer, thanks to some help from the folks here, and want to know how far back I need to set the timer to switch ON the water heater, so that I can have a warm shower. 1 hour before I need the hot water? 1/2 an hour?

Assume that I need hot water for my shower at 7:30am, and for washing dinner dishes at 9:00pm. I'm the only person in the apartment, and my water heater is 5500 watts 240 vac, 40 gallons, and I live in Virginia (cold winters, hot summers).

What would be the best ON/OFF schedule to set for the timer?

Cool

Scott,
Just set the timer for about a half-hour before you think that you need to use hot water, and have it cut off when you won't need hot water.
