Adding a water filter to the main line

Hello,
We had a little "incident" on Friday with our well. We were getting the house ready for company and we were watering the lawn, running the dishwasher and just cleaning. Too make a long story short, the water was running "red/brown" for a few seconds and I ended up having to clean every faucet screan and flushing the toilets 3 times each!

I've had a filter I've been meaning to install. I actually called the "well guy" this morning to get some info on our well. In talking to him, he advised me NOT to install the filter in between the pressure switch and the well tank. He told me to install it on the main line, after the tank. He also said to get a filter that's 20 microns or bigger. He said the 5 micron ones will cause a serious drop in pressure.

Since the main line is copper, I think I may call in a plumber to install the filter. I'm pretty confident that I could "sweat" pipes, but I don't want to "re-learn" on this job! What's a good price to get someone to install a filter?

Any thoughts regarding the 20vs 5 mircron filters?

Your "well guy" is right.
Install the filter in the main line after the pressure tank, and go with the larger micron filter. Too small microns will drastically drop your water pressure.

Thanks Old Guy! Now, when I've seen pictures of these filters installed, it looks like they mount the filter in an "upside down" " U " off the main line. Our main line goest straight up from the tank and runs a long a floor joist. TO make the configuration I often see, it would have to be mounted in the living room! Can these things be mounted "in line" on the pipe?

Thanks for the sweating instructions! I actually just bought a torch to burn weeds in a plant bed. I was going to return it becuase it shuts off after you tilt it 90 degrees or more. I may hold on to it now.....

Just mount it in-line in a convenient place to change the filter. You don't need an inverted U.
Cut off the pump. Measure out what you need to remove, and hacksaw (or tubing cutter) it out of the existing cold water pipe. Use a bucket or drain to catch the residual water draining back out of the line (open the farthest cold water faucet for air). You can't solder with water in the line.
The filter should have (probably) two 3/4" female connections on the head of it.
Sweat two copper male fittings on two short 6" lengths of copper pipe. (Always heat the fittings only.)
Wrap 2-3 flat turns of teflon tape clockwise only onto the male fittings threads, and install in the filter head (cold, of course).
Sweat two collars on the other ends of the short pipe onto both ends of the line. Dry fit them together first to make sure that all fits, and then take it apart to apply flux.
Re-assemble and solder. Good Luck!

Seems pretty straight forward! Glad to know I don't need that "inverted "U" " Why do usually mount them that way? Is that to make it easy to change the filter?

P.S. Leave the filter off to allow heat to dissipate easily while soldering the collars.
