toilet almost overflows every flush

We replaced the fill valve & flapper, as well as the tank lever arm in our toilet last night due to corroded parts. The toilet was flushing fine before we did this but now the bowl fills almost to overflowing when we try to flush and then the water just drains back down rather than flushing. Any idea what would cause this? We have read over the directions several times and don't see anything we missed. We have adjusted the float cup and the chain to the proper positions. Thanks for any advice you may have.

Could be clogged in the trap use a toilet auger to see if that solves the problem.
