black substance in drain

I have a slimy black substance all over the drain stop in two bathrooms and I am curious if it could be old toothpast, or a water or mold problem. Has anyone seen this. I believe the "tail" of the drain, which it is on, is made of pastic, and I've read that black mold does not grow on plastic.

Any comments would be appreciated. Not sure if I should soak it in bleach, or try to find out exactly what it is.

Thanks!!!

Cool

It is a common mold, and you can keep it under control by using an enzyme-based drain cleaner like DrainCare regularly, and then flushing it down with hot water to keep the drain clear.
(Black mold CAN buildup and grow on PVC plastic.)
Just follow the directions on the DrainCare jug. It will eat hair, soap scum, and other mold buildup.
You also can use bleach and hot water if you're on a public sewer system, but not if you're on a septic system.
Good Luck!
