Unhappy Faucet Shower/Tub

I have DELTA Shower Faucet single handle. There is a small knob under the faucet handle that is used to disingauge the faucet and activate the showehead. This knob is supposed to be pushed in to engauge the showerhead and pulled out to fill the tub. The knob was pushed in too far and some pliers were used to pull it out. Whe this happened the knob came all the way out and water started shooting out where the knob used to be. Now the knob is jamed in, so that faucet will fill the tub but the showerhead will not work unless the knob is forced out again.
Can this be fixed without calling a plumber and if so, what do i need to do?

Shut the water off to the house and take the valve apart, take the parts with you to Home Depot and get the repair kit for it, then just reassemble the valve the way you took it apart.
