water heater pressure release valve

The pressure release valve has suddenly been dumping out water in the basement. We have a 5 year old gas water heater. We first noticed the problem last week and turned down the heat thinking that may have been the problem. We don't go into the basement much and didn't notice the problem again until last night. The hot water barely made it through one shower. When my husband went down in the basement, quite a bit of water was on the floor. Do you think the valve needs to be replaced? Or is this a more serious problem?

Replace the valve 1st and see if that fixes it.
