leaking toilet

Our toilet has a drip at the interface between the inlet and the tank. There are two possible culprits (right?): the water inlet valve (Fluidmaster float-cup type), or possibly the external supply line and fastener.

Is the second candidate a possibility, and should I try any replacements there... or should I go straight to a new Fluidmaster 400A, playing the odds that the problem lies on that side of the joint (--an approach that appears a bit more involved, requiring tank removal, etc.)

Thanks--
SB

Cool

You don't need to remove the tank for any of that.
You just need to seal where it's leaking.
There will be a nut under the tank holding the water line to the bottom of the water inlet valve in the tank. The threaded part of the inlet valve sticks down through the hole in the tank.
You need to either re-seal around the hole in the tank or around the threads.
Try to determine exactly where it is leaking.

To repair either,
1. Turn off the toilet water supply shut-off valve.
2. Flush the toilet, and sponge any leftover water in the bottom of the tank into the bowl.
3. Unscrew that nut counter-clockwise.
4. Move the water inlet valve over inside the tank, dry around the hole, and smear on a little petroleum jelly on both sides of the washer to help seal it.
5. Wrap 2-3 flat turns of teflon tape clockwise only around the threads of the bottom of the inlet valve.
6. Tighten it all back together. That should fix either leak.
Good LucK!
Mike
