Shower Receptor plumbing

I am going to be installing a Swanstone (solid surface preformed) shower receptor to replace an existing fiberglass one. The previous drain connection seemed to slide over the drain pipe and had some hard stuff on the inside of the drain connector( I have no idea what it is) that seemed to either seal it or control its depth. I want to get an idea of how the newer drain connectors work. Thanks in advance for your help.

The old drain sounds like a caulked fitting. Some newer ones use a rubber gasket to seal the drain. You should have an option to use whatever type drain you want unless the shower drain is preformed in the pan. The pan slides over the drain pipe then you apply some dishsoap on the gasket and slide it over the drain pipe intil it is recessed into the drain far enough for the strainer to attach to the drain.

That makes sense to some of the mechanics that I have seen. Thanks for your help.
