Thumbs down water softener

Our water softener doesn't. We bought the house last May and the softener came with it, so I have no idea about the history or how old it is. It is a Culligan water softener.

1.Is there anything I can check out myself before I pay someone to come out to look at it?

2.It is really loud when it regenerates. Like a water, screechy, loud. Is that normal?

Going from some phone advice from our Culligan man, I have tried regenerating it a few extra times, but did not notice a change in the water. He also suggested flushing out the hot water tank. Haven't done that yet. Also, I haven't noticed the salt level dropping in the past month.

Thanks,
mwolf

Not real familiar with Culligan softners. I avoid them at all times. If you are not using any salt, the obvious place to start is there. there should be water with the salt. Initiate a regeneration and watch the brine tank. At some point in the regeneration, the water level in the brine tank should go down. The control valve will be drawing brine from the tank and putting it through the resin column. After that cycle, the tank should refill to the same point it started from. If this is not happening, you probably have a plugged orifice in the brine injection valve - which is the most common problem. Other causes are a bad float valve in the brine tank.

If you are using brine and your water is not soft, it is possible your resin is bad.
