Plumber's putty vs adhesive caulk

I have a plastic (?, definitely not fiberglass) shower basin in a surround. I need to seal between the basin and the drain insert as I get a slight gap between the gasket and drain when weight is placed near it.

Plumber's putty would seem to last longer and be better than an adhesive caulk, but the directions say it's not to be used on plastic....

Would really bad things happen if I did?

Bad is a relative term. It will discolor the plastic over time. If you can live with that, then it would not be bad.
I would use a clear silicone and work it into the joint, but that's just me.

Many thanks.

I think I'll go the caulk route and eventually come up from underneath and re-inforce the basin.
