Question White, chalky substance in water lines

For the last several months we have noticed a hard, white, chalky substance in our water lines. It has clogged all the faucets in the house repeatedly.
Could you tell me what this might be and how to get rid of it?

Cool

This is caused by a deteriorating cold water supply diptube in your water heater. You need to replace the diptube, and flush the water heater.
This is a common problem, and involved a class-action lawsuit (sorry, you missed the 12/31/00 deadline).
Do a search in here for the how-to about dip tubes.
Good luck!
Mike
