Unhappy sulfur odor in hot water

We just replaced the catalyst in our hot water tank and now we get an awful sulfur odor anytime we use hot water. We drained the tank twice, but the smell keeps coming back after a day or 2.
Other background infor: We have hard water and use a water softener.

Please help.

In hot water??? LOL

Sorry...had to do it!

Ok right off the old noggin, I feel
the odor is caused by a reaction between your water and the magnesium anode in the water heater. Removing it should eliminate the odor, but will also reduce the life of the water heater. You should contact the water heater company to see if they have a fix that does not affect their warranty.

OR

Secondly, since you didn't mention black water (sulfur organisms)...this is a good link for problem water.

Can be a couple other things, but the first (above) is most usually what I have found.

I truly hope I have helped!
If you have more
?s, pls write back!
