Post septic tank emptying

How do you know when a septic tank needs emptied. We have had alot of rain recently and ive been told that theoretically having it emptied only helps if its full of "solids" .. will a reputable (yellow pages) type sewage hauler do some sort of check on this or am i at my own guesstimate? Thanks--Josh

Cool

Septic systems typically have a 1,000-gallon tank.
The tank should be pumped out at least every five years (primarily to remove solids...sludge in the bottom and floating grease, etc. on top).
However, for temporary relief when the ground is saturated from excess rain and the drains are backing up, it also can be pumped out to allow the tank to collect house drainage while the drainfield drys out enough to begin functioning again.
You can open up the access on top of the septic system and look down in it yourself.
Poke the floating sludge with a shovel. If it is too thick, or congealed into a solid mass, OR if you need temporary drain relief, pump the tank.
A tank pump-out costs $125 here.
That's really all that is necessary to properly maintain a septic system. You don't need to add any of those "additives" to the system. They're a waste of money. Normal usage should keep plenty of bacteria in the system.
Good luck!
Mike
