Question Need help to get thermostatic gas valve off water heater!

Hope someone can tell me how to do this. I have to put on a new thermostatic gas valve. I have drained the water heater, loosened all the nuts for all the connections including the gas line and now I can't get the gas valve unscrewed. Is there a trick to this? I have the water off to the entire house because the person who installed the water heater didn't put a shut off valve on it. Now what?? How do I get it off? I've already had a strong man try and he couldn't get it turned either.

Thanks,
Newt

Use an 18" pipe wrench spinning the old control counterclock-wise as you look at it.
Sometimes, these are gorilla tight, but it will come off.

You should consider installing a valve on the cold water inlet side only so you can isolate the tank in the future. Do not put any valve on the hot water outlet side.

Hope this helps...

Thank You!

Thanks Notuboo!

About 20 minutes ago a friend arrived who used to work for White Westinghouse and brought the proper wrench and his muscles. With all that, the manufacturer sent me the wrong sized gas valve!! We are installing the shut off valve on the cold water side. What a day. Ah, the joys of home ownership. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Again, thank you so much!
