Water heater element testing

How does one test the operation of heater element? Please don't say just replace them both, I need specifics. I have a multimeter but I am not very well versed in its usage. I know how to test the voltage but that is about it. I have also tried a continuity tester but I never get a complete circuit, even when I try it on a brand new one. What am I missing?

check to see if the battery in the tester is good and you have it set at the correct setting. touch the two ends of the tester together before you try it on an element.

Cool

Pauly,
I disconnect both element wires to check the elements for continuity with the ohm meter.
No continuity. Replace.
You might do a search in here on the subject. There have been a number of discussions about it.

I would not trust the continuity tester if it shows no reading on a new element!
