whiskey barrel water fountain

I'm making a water fountain out of this barrel. I would like to know if I need to do anything special to the recycled water? I do not plan to put fish or flowers in it...just decorative pebbles. Do i have to replace the water, time to time? Would i get algae at all? I have the insert which is made of plastic just for this size barrel. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Boothbay,

If you don't have any plants or fish in it you don't HAVE to change the water out, but you may want to for debri sake. The fountain will keep O2 at an acceptable level and help curb algae production, but you want to be sure not to place it in a lot of sunlight (no sunlight would be best for clear water without fish and plants). You will find that evaporation will occur and thus adding water will have to happen. Good luck..
