Pond water safety

Can the water in a filtered plastic be made fairly safe? For example, no giardia or other microorganisms?

safe is a relative term, what do you want to do with the water ? what is the source of the water and what condition is it in now. not sure what you mean by "water in a filtered plastic"

I meant a rigid plastic pond like those at home centers, with a filter. We are concerned about pets drinking it. One pet has had problems with giardia in intestinal tract, probably from drinking from puddles. Water source is well water via a water softener, basically same as the household supply.

To clarify, the water should be safe when the pond is first filled. But how do we keep it safe if it is only being filtered and recycled, without treatment?

you're likely correct about the puddle drinker, but dogs have a very strong constitution for such activities. if you have fish in the tub i don't know what you could add to it. just plants, maybe a few drops of bleach every week.

Fish and plants were not a requirement, so I guess some kind of disinfectant will work, like bleach?
