Question How to deal with cattails/bulrushes?

I live on the banks of a shallow bay, with a muck bottom. Last year a large patch of cattails/bulrushes appeared along the shore where I keep my canoe. It got to the point I couldn't even get through them to get to the water. The plants are starting to emerge already, and they seem to be thicker than ever.

Is there a way to kill off a section of these plants that is not environmentally irresponsible? I like living with nature, but want to be able to enjoy my waterfrontage too.

All suggestions appreciated.

Tom

Some folks pull up plants and others are more aggressive and excavate them. Spraying nonselective herbicide kills all vegetation that comes in contact with it and may be harmful to other life in water. Brushing systemic herbicide, which is absorbed by plant all the way to the roots, on stalks and leaves will kill plants.
