Rain Barrel
I recently acquired a rain barrel with missing inlet and overflow connectors. The barrel has a screw-on cover with a 2" threaded opening in the middle. I purchased a male PVC connector from Home Depot but the threads did not match the female thread on the cover which was coarser. Are there particular fittings for rain barrels? Can anyone tell me where to find them?
I also noticed most rain barrels have a funnel like design on it's top cover. As mine doesn't have this feature, I plan to hook up a large funnel over the inlet hole and cover it with a screen. Does anyone have another suggestion?

I realize it's been a while since you posted your question. Hopefully you have found the answers to your questions. If not, maybe this site will be helpful.

Thanks for the link. I've dropped by and will definitely use it as reference when I rehabilitate the barrel. Unfortunately there are too many things to do around the house for me to even get there. But as they say, as sure as the sun rises in the east...

Yes indeed. I moved to my new place almost 3 months ago and to this day, I still have my hands full. I start doing one thing and then get distracted and end up doing something else It's nice to see things getting done though.

ok dum question ....
what exactly are rain barrels for ? I mean the obvious is to catch rain water but then what ? I have seen them in old towns but never knew what they were for, I just assumed that they were catching water for areas with out abundance of water, i.e. not close to rivers or lakes etc. but no a days ????
What are you using it for ?

I've got a huge garden
The rain barrel actually came with the house and I figured I could save some $$$ if I use it to water the garden. Which now begs the question where will I find the time to do all that?
I've asked for a quote for a sprinkler system but if it's too much money then I'll have to do it the traditional way.

Hi Spearharper,
Rain barrels are used for watering the garden in times when water is in short supply. Right now in Maryland there are restrictions on water usage, even after all the rain we just had. Water that runs off the roof is saved in the barrel and used when needed.

Here are some connector ideas for 55 gallon barrels. The connector you need is described here as a 1/2" threaded coupling. These are $1 parts.
