sand getting into polaris filter

I have about a 28,000 inground pool in which I changed out the sand in the pacfab filter a year ago. Since then I have had sand particles clogging the filter screen to my ploaris cleaner. I called a pool repair man who came out to my house and said that I probably damaged one of the (laterals?) in the sand filter when I changed the sand. He has now emptied the filter of sand and pulled out all of these laterals and says the are all ok. He says there is a possibility that there is a tiny crack in the filter and now wants to install a new one. I am getting tired of this. If I need a new filter, should I go ahead and get a DE filter? If I put a new filter in will I still have the same problem? Any ideas?

May have had the wrong sized sand. Saw this a few years ago, company doing work also thought the laterals were damaged and had about 2-3 gallons of sand in pool every day.
