how many gallons?
I recently moved into a new home that has a built in pool that is configured as a 'lazy L' from 4 to 8 feet and measures 16 x 40 is there a formula for figuring out approx. how many gallons this pool is? also is the filter supposed to be running all day? is there a good website for general pool guidance?

Pinch-a-Penny has a good on-line guide at:

There's a capacity calculator in there and I plugged in your numbers and got approx 28,000 gallons.
You shouldn't need to run your filter all day unless it is being used 12 hours a day by every kid in the neighborhood. Your filtering system will have some impact; a better system, like DE, won't have to run as long. I'm running my DE system about 6 hours a day which is plenty. During the winter (when the temp here gets WAY down in the 50's and 60's!) I run it about 4 hours a day. Less efficient cartridge systems may need to run longer during the day.
