Pool smeels like a swamp.

Pool smeels like a swamp.
Hello, We have just purchased a home with a in ground pool. The home had been empty for two years, and the pool has been uncovered for the same amount of time . I do plan on draining it soon but would like to know if there is any treatment that we could use to stop the neighborhood from smelling like a frog pond.
Thanks

Not sure just what you have are how bad. Id get some pool chlorine like 5 gal of it and put it in for now. Thats a 10% chlorine so use it. I dont think I would use the pump and filter for the pool to try and pump it out . Rent a old solids diaphragm pump to get all the yuck out. Id drain it now
You dont say where you are . Check and see if you can empty the pool there ok with out it poping out of the ground. Id pump it out and wash it down good and pump that out before I fill and turn on the pool pump for sure . If you use the pool pump you could jam up the pipe lines.

Thank you for the reply. We live in Mass and a friend from the DPW will be draining it today with a large gas powered pump... There happens to be a bout three feet of decaying leaves on the bottom that are adding to the repulsive smell, in addition to the green water. The liner looks new but is now covered with a green slime. Do you see any problem with a empty pool for several months ??
Thanks again.
