Unhappy Help-Spa is draining back to pool!

When the pool motor is turned off, the spa (which is above to pool level) drains down to the spa return jet. There is a check valve in the 1" dia. spa return line, maybe it's just leaking backwards? If I replace check valve can I install a ball/gate valve (to control flow into spa return & pool 2" dia. return line). If so should the ball valve be installed downstream of the check valve? Thanx

when the spa is elevated above the pool a check valve is always installed on the by-pass line , in your case that would be the 1 " line , water can also return to the pool after the pump shuts off via other means, 1. would be the 3 - way valve on the return side plumbing , 2. the 3 - way valve on the suction side of the plumbing. these are generally jandy or compool 3 - way valves .

you can tell if the valves are bad by placing the valves on spa suction spa return , make a note where the water line is , normally at the spill way to the pool and after say 1 hour if the water in the spa is dropping you know the return valve is passing some water to the pool , or on the other hand if water is still overflowing to the pool may be very small amount you have a leak at the suction side 3-way valve.

9 times out of 10 its the spa by - pass check valve use a spring loaded one, jandy makes a good one you will have to use reducer bushings as they only make them in 1 1/2 " / 2 "

if you want more water to your spa you will have to put a valve on the pool return side after the spa by - pass plumbing.
