pool drain question

Is there a pool drain opener/closer?
My pool loses a lot of water...I cover the drain and the leakage stop but is there something that opens the pool drain?
My brother a while back was messing/turning some of the pipe nobes for the return water back to the pool.
There are two one is for the return but the other one not sure what it is for.
any ideas how to locate the opener?
Thanks

There is really no way for us to know how your installation is piped. Usually, a pool drain is routed to one of the skimmers then the skimmers piped back to the pump.
When you say you plug the drain do you mean that you dive down and actually plug the drain inside the pool?
Can you take a picture of your pump and piping? Where the suction enters your pump go back towards the pool. Is there a TEE connector (possibly with a valve) where the two skimmers join to go into the pump suction? Is there a third pipe going to suction?
It's just too difficult without pictures...
