Pool - handle/lever stuck for backwash

Hi, we have an inground pool...with a sand filter...it has become increasing difficult to push down the handle to backwash it. A sticker on it says to use a silicon jelly/lubricant. My husband went to the pool company to buy the jelly and they told him that you can't directly apply it to the outside...you have to take apart the motor?? I think my husband misunderstood...looking at the base of the handle it has about 3 screws...am I correct in assuming that this is what needs to be taken apart, to apply the jelly? Thanks, for any advice.

The way you explained it having 3 screws it is a push pull valve. Yes you will remove the screws making sure pump is off. You will then pull out the inside valve, then lube all the orings and gaskets good. If they are cracking and brittle you may want to replace them. Your local pool co should have them or be able to order for you. Good luck...
