Filter Sand

How long does sand last(on the average) & how do you know it's needing to be changed? My sand is about ten years old,I backwash after I vacuum or whenever the psi increases.
I have a 16" Doughboy with 150# of sand.

Some will tell you 5-6 years others and myself 10-12 if it is taken care of and cleaned regularly. Does it need to be changed? Is your pool clear or is it just not clearing up nicely? If not then you should change. After 10 yrs I would go ahead and change. Be careful not to break the laterals in the bottom of the tank and make sure to fill 3/4 with water before adding new sand.
