Hayward Model H3501 Pool Heater

I have a Model H3501 Hayward Pool heater. We have had this heater for about 10 years with very good service thus far. I am trying to light it off and the pilot is not staying lit. I can see it spark and light off, but after 1 minute when I release the selector knob, the pilot goes out. I am thinking it is either the thermopile or the gas valve. If the thermopile voltage is above 500 mV, then the problem should be the gas valve. Question does it matter if I check the voltage with thermopile hot or at ambient temperature?

Thanks Ken
