Pump causing a short

My tub is tripping the breaker immediately after resetting it. I have pulled the wires off the control panel and the breaker stayed so I know the breaker is fine. I then pulled the pump off of the control panel and the breaker did not trip. After looking inside the pump and drying everything out, I flipped the breaker and everything worked fine, until I opened the valve so the water would flow into the pump. At this point the breaker trips immediately. Any ideas on why this would be tripping the breaker?

Water getting into the windings or electrical connection? Or the motor is wornout and the windings may just be shorting. Any number of things. Get a new pump.

More than likely the problem is not with the pump, but with the electric heater.
