Cleaning scum from Hot tub

I was hoping some one could tell me a good way of cleaning our hot tub without breaking the bank! I keep spending so much on store baught stuff that doesn't seem to work. We have a lot of scum going around the sides of the tub!!

The first question should be what is the source of the scum?
If you maintain proper chemical levels in the spa and take a quick shower before you get in, you should have a minimal scum problem. Is the scum above the water level or below?
If just on the bare side above the water line, drain some water and then clean with a good household cleaner, i.e. 409, etc. If it's all over and you've tried commercial additives you may have to completely drain, clean, and refill. Good luck.
