Does algae affect titanium chlorinator plates?

Does algae negatively affect the titanium plates in a chlorinator? Because if there's algae in the pool, brushing and running pool motor is part of cleaning and clearing out the algae. If so, is it a better design to install gate valves that bypass the chlorinator when so needed? I am new to salt pool and just trying to figure out some stuff.
