White onion vs. Brown onion

Anyone know the real difference between the 2?

If a recipe states to use "x" amount of onions...which do you chose from...why?

If I am using an onion in a cooked recipe, I use Spanish (brown skinned) yellow onions. For appearance in a salad or on a burger I use white onion. Also in salads I may use a Red onion to offset all the greens. I don't see much difference in taste, even Vidalia. Onions get their sweet or pungent taste from the soil they are grown in so if you don't know where they came from, you never know until you taste it. Happy cooking.
