making pop corn using butter and not oil
can i substitute oil with melted stick butter in a automatic pop corn popper. the popcorn tastes bad and dry.

I don't think I'd substitute butter for oil to pop it, but you could pour the melted butter over the popcorn when it's done.
It'll taste like movie popcorn then.

i've been using that butter flavored oil for popping. figured if i use real butter it will come out better. melting butter to pour over makes a mess. i should invest in one of those melted butter pumps like theaters have

A friend of mine has one of those hot air popcorn machines. No oil needed and therefore less fat. Then he douses it with melted butter. Duh.
I like the hot air popcorn, but use the Mrs. Butter, or whatever the name is of the sprinkle flavor. Less fat all the way around and it tastes great.

I don't think you can pop the corn with butter because butter doesn't have a high burning point like oil does. The corn and butter would probably burn first before popping.

Shadeladie, you are right, and using the butter to pop it won't give it a buttery flavor, just a burned butter flavor. The flavorings are added after popping.

One of my coworkers used to work in a theatre and explained the secret ingredient was something similar to lard, comes in a solid state similar to crisco. Can't remember the name, its worse than KFC gravy directly injected to your veins, but tastes damn good, and you add it after its popped. If I find out what its called I will post it.

If you are referring to Kernal Seasons (sp.?) sold in theaters, the kettle corn and white cheddar taste great. I myslef do frying pan popcorn using olive oil, drizzled olive oil on top with buffalo wing sauce and parm cheese

Movie theaters (at least Regal Cinemas) use coconut oil. It comes in 35 pound bags. They don't always use all of it so I brought home a bag with about 1/2 pound in it. Tastes pretty good, but forgot to mention I can bring this home because I clean a movie theater.

I'm a popcorn addict

I had a customer once that had a long list of things the doctor told him he could no longer eat, popcorn was one of them. I told him - I'd find a different doctor!!
While I grew up eating popcorn cooked on the stove, the microwave bags are too easy to use and the butter is already added. My wife likes to buy the 'light' popcorn
but the 'butter' popcorn tastes better
