Are bitter mushrooms toxic?

Some sliced mushrooms from the grocery store were starting to turn slick so I sauteed them with onions but they tasted bitter, had to throw them out. Does bitterness indicate toxicity or just bitterness? I didn't feel any ill effects after the couple of bites I took.

Thanks!

Edible mushrooms that are sold at a grocery store don't necessarily get "toxic" as they age. If they were rotten, yeah they would probably taste bad. Like bitter lettuce, rotten potatoes or asparagus.

However any food or produce (that is either old or has not been stored properly) could have any number of bacteria that cause botulism, salmonella or other types of food poisoning.
