Unhappy Jiggling, but having trouble with lock

I have a Yale door lock. The only way I can open or close it is by jiggling the key in the lock for 30 seconds. Is there any way to fix this by taking the lock apart and examining/fixing it? I rent, and the owner seems reluctant to replace it.

Usually this is the result of an old lock with worn pins and/or key. Improperly cut keys can cause the same problem.

If there is a key that works good-get a duplicate off that. If all keys are bad it is best to have the lock repinned and possibly new keys cut.

DIY options include repin kits sold at some home centers or removing the lock and bringing to a locksmith. Both of these eliminate the trip charge which can be expensive. Your reluctant landlord (probably not reluctant when collecting the rent ) should take care of this-at least get him to cover expenses, which should be around 10-20 dollars.
