Strike plates with lips?

I've been doing some research into door reinforcement and was wondering what are the lips on the strike plates for?

Are they there to protect the part of the wood frame where the strike plate is installed?

Yes, they protect the wood of the frame from the latch. They also reduce friction on the latch when the door is closing, preventing the door from hanging up and excessive wear on the latch itself.
