Key spins in lock

The lock on my door doesn't work anymore. On the inside I have the little knob that turns to lock and unlock, that works. When I came home today and used the key to unlock the door, the key just spins and spins around in the lock. It started doing this a few days ago, but it would eventually click and unlock. Today it didn't. I took it apart to see if there was anything obvious, but things looked normal. If i hold the knob tight in my hand, it seems to work okay, then I put it back on the door, and the key spins again.

Thank you

Hi doitmyselfgirl,

What you are describing is a broken lock. The piece that goes from the lock on the outside is broken. What brand lock is it? If you visit your local locksmith, they can repair it for you. And by bringing it to them, it will save on the trip/service charge.

I do not know the brand name of the lock. It's at least 16 years old, because that's how long we've been here. Today it spun around and then opened. I will try your suggestion and take it in to a locksmith before it is completely shot.

Thanks
