Removal of Baldwin exterior lock

The thumbpiece on the outside of a Baldwin exterior lock does not work at all; it simply droops, not activating the deadbolt. Once the 2 screws on the door jamb are removed and the inside door knob is taken off, how do you remove the rest of the lock from the door?

Hi Clarklorne, and welcome to the board. Sorry it took so long to answer your post, but it's christmas, and I wasn't online much today.

From what you describe, I am guessing you have a handle on the outside of the door? With a thumb piece that is pushed down to operate the lock? If so, and this may sound silly, but the bottom of the handle is secured to the door with a screw. There may be a cover over the screw hiding it, but it's there. This may be your problem.

Also, the inner knob usually mounts on a spindle. If so, has that been removed? It should simply pull out from the front. If it is difficult to remove, try spreying it with some WD-40 or some other similar product. CRC is good as it penetrates well.

Other than those 2 things, I can't think of what else to recommend. Post back to the board with your findings.

Jeez...I had written a fairly lengthy reply but it got lost somewhere along the line while trying to post it.
But cuedude pretty well summed it up anyway.

One questions though?
Is your Baldwin a Mortise or Tubular style gripset?
Mortise is identified by an 8" faceplate on doors edge with latch/bolt/and two buttons while a tubular has two separate face plates that house latch and bolt.

Regards

removal of baldwin exterior lock

Baldwins have two sets of screws, one to hold the interior handle half on, and another one buried to hold the outside clamshell on. Get a small flashlight and see if you can find the other two screws. I had this problem and had to wing it one time. I hope we are talking about the same lockset. I just remember it being a bear and the second set of screws being obscured.

Removal of Bldwin Lock

I will await daytime tomorrow (Wednesday) to have another go at removal of the lock. Indeed there is a handle on the outside and I did in fact undo the screw from the inside that releases the bottom half of the mounting outside, or at least loosens it. The problem is the top part did not loosen so I could not disengage/take out the (defective) thumbpiece. Perhaps I simply need to take off the inner doorknob (easily done with newly purchased set of allen keys) and give the rod on the inside a real good whack which, hopefully, will allow the exterior mounting to come off without damaging the door paint.
I believe it is a Tubular style, and I will search for the "other two screws". Thks to respondees. I will advise of results. Happy Holidays.

Hi Clarklorne,

The light has now come on. I was under the impression the inner knob was already off. If you are dealing with a tubular lock, and not the mortise type, one thing that may be causing you trouble is the bore initially made in the door. Sometimes they are just a bit short. This causes the body of the mechenism to bind on the latch side of the hole. My suggestion is (Literally) wiggle the body of the lock as you pull it out. They can be really tight, so it may take a bit of wiggling to get it off the latch and in your hand. I hope all this helps you out. Again, keep us informed on your progress.

Removal of Baldwin Exterior Lock

Good news and bad news:I did indeed manage to get the lock removed and discovered the gearbox for the outside thumbpiece and inside knob was broken. When I phoned Baldwin's consumer service (after the usual long, long wait) I was advised these particular locks, the Baldwin 5315 Logan, have had serious gearbox problems and Baldwin is sending me free of charge an entire replacement kit, complete with detailed instructions. So, if anyone out there has a similar lock, be aware of the "recall" ...........
Many thks for all your help gentlemen!
Happy New Year.
