Dexter push-button knob w/no key

We have Dexter knobs with a push-button twist lock on the inside of the room. There isn't a key to unlock from the outside; there's not even a regular keyhole. There is an approx. 1/4 inch hole where you'd normally find a keyhole. Is there some kind of special "key" for this type of knob? We never realized the situation until the door was accidentally locked and then pulled shut with no one inside the room. I was able to use a small screwdriver in the hole to jimmy it open. Don't want to have that happen again, but don't want to replace all the knobs if we don't have to. Thanks for any help you can provide! (Obviously, I'm not knowledgeable about locks - pardon my lack of proper terminology!) Thanks!

Nope, you did it right. That hole is the keyhole and a small flat-bladed screwdriver is what is typically used. You're actually turning the knob to unlock the door that way.

Because of the hole in the outside knob, as you've found out, they don't offer security.
These are typically used for a bathroom door and are known in the biz as a "Privacy knobset".

Thank you!

Thanks for the information regarding our "privacy knobset". At some point in the near future, we'll probably look into replacing these (we have 7) - it was tricky opening it the other day & who has time to "practice" opening them in case this happens again?!

If you buy the kind of privacy knob that has a button you push to lock it instead of the kind you turn, all you do to open it from the outside is push something through that hole and it pops the button out the back and unlocks the door - a lot simpler maneuver.
