Question Ugly Bright Yellow Gold Sliding Door Handle Plating

I just had a new vinyl replacement sliding door installed. Yes I could do-it-myself, but instead of wasting a whole Saturday with the chore I elected to have it done. The handle that came with the door is a very bright yellow gold plating. Is there anyway that I can cause it to tarnish in order to reduce the brightness. It looks really cheap the way it is. I have no idea what type of door it is, but it has an exterior key lock (which is required).

Any thoughts would be great.

Never done that one myself. Deteriorating finishes is usually a problem in our field.

I googled "antiquing bright brass" and found several suggestions. Not sure how good they would work for you. There are also companies that offer hardware restoration.

Many manufacturers put a protective coating on the hardware to protect the finish.

Have you checked with the installer to see if other finishes are available? If so he might exchange it to have a happy customer. Or, if you ruin the hardware trying to tone it down then you could at least buy a new one.
