Exterior Knob Jammed

Hi, we were gone for a few days and when we came back, the knob on our exterior back door was jammed. This knob worked perfect just a few days before (and for the last 5 years).

Unlocking the knob and turning it, it wouldn't move much at all - as in it would not draw the shank (?) in. I forcefully turned the knob and felt it strip inside. I had to remove the knob and tear the innards apart to remove it from the door jam.

My question is, how could this happen? There is a storm door on the outside of this door so weather should not be a problem. Did someone try to break in and jammed the spindle in the process?

Thanks!

Hard to determine without knowing the brand and model of lock.
