Door handle broke off out of door knob/lock set

Hi all. The inside door handle broke off on my fiance's door handle set. It's hard to see in the attached picture, but a jagged part of the door handle still remains in the handle set. My questions for the experts here:

1. Do I need to buy a whole new lock set, or will a handle/lever just by itself suffice and fit into that door handle set?

2. If I can just replace the lever part, do how would I remove the remnants of the door handle?

3. If I need to buy a whole new handle set, do they come in standard sizes so it will be easy to replace this one with another?

For the time being at least the lock on top still locks people out and keeps the family safe.

Thank you all for your help, I really appreciate it.

Hard to say, as the part we need to see (the spindle) is not visible in the photo... nor is the part that fits onto it pictured- the back side of the handle itself... and we don't know the brand, which is possibly printed on the latch end of the door.

Often the handle fits onto the spindle and it's set with an allen screw. Without being able to see the parts in question this is kind of like a blind squirrel trying to find a nut.

More than likely this is not something you will be able to get parts for unless you can identify the manufacturer and you call their service department directly... or it was purchased recently and you have the receipt. But knowing the brand name would give us a place to start.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try to get my fiance to take more photos of what you said, as I'm currently out of town.

Here is a picture of the outside of the door handle setup.

Looks like the same Kwikset as post #525510....the one that may have been discontinued due to too many failures. Does the inside knob retract the latch and deadbolt at the same time, ie., "interconnected"? These types in residential grade have been troublesome. Would be better to use a separate handleset for simple latching and deadbolt for security.

Thanks. It looks very similar. Unfortunately the broken separated door lever/knob is gone, and the fiance is in no mood to check the interconnectedness of the latch and the deadbolt.

With that said, do I need to change the exterior door parts at all? It would be nice if I only had to change the clearly broken interior door part, and keep the exterior the same.

Based on your recommendations, it sounds like the interior should have two separate parts, rather than 1 part.

Thanks again

Even if the separate inside parts will match the existing outside parts (and I'm doubtful of that) in this price range parts are hard to find. I've not checked Kwikset's website, but the complete handleset and deadbolt, installed separately in their respective holes may be available in the same style & finish. They're not terribly expensive, compared to other brands.

good luck getting replacement parts. The product is discontinued. PM me for a source where you might have luck finding spares.

Thanks all. I replaced the door handle with a different model set by Kwikset I picked up at a hardware store. For the parts not covered by the new door handle I will have to clean and paint over a bit. Once again, thank you all for your help.
