Door knob won't tighten back on

I could use some advice at how to reattach the inside door knob to my front door of the house. It started becoming loose last week, and it finally fell off yesterday. I can place the knob back on, but it will remain lose and fall off. I am not sure how to tighten the knob that it stays put.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Look at the knob that came off. At the base of the knob you'll find a little hole or slot. Push a small screwdriver or paper clip in the hole and the knob will slide off. Then remove the decorative escutcheon plate. Then put the base plate on the door. The screw heads will fit through the big part of the slot and a slight rotation to the narrow part of the slot will hold it in place. Tighten the screws. Place the escutcheon plate over the base plate and push the knob back into place. It should click once it's properly seated.

Remove the plate from the back of the handle. http://s3.postimg.org/wg256y4wj/IMAG0177_1.jpg

There is a thin lever along the edge of the plate that you need ti slide in irder to release the plate.

Once the plate is off, put it on the door and tighten the screws down. Then put the knob on and twist the knob both ways like you are opening the door. That engages tge latch.

The little levers that X is talking about are at the 1 and 7 o'clock in the pic. It will be readily apparent once the plate is off. The plate is only held by the indents at 10 and 4.

You can look up Kwikset Kwik Install instructions. If it's not that exact brand...it's a clone.

Thanks for the advice. I have been messing with removing the plate by switching the lever over but it hasn't been removing. I will tug at it some more to see if it will come off as I have been switching those two levers back and forth.

The cover just pops out towards the handle. The levers/tabs are connected by an inner plate. Once the levers/tabs are fully unlocked, the inner brass look plate will slide off the handle shaft and is held by the screws. Then the handle and it's plate is inserted and locked by twisting. It works quite well. I've had my whole house that way for 8 yrs.

Thanks guys for the help! The issue with removing the plate is that I wasn't pushing the lever all the way over. It felt like it was as far as it could go as I didn't want to put all my strength into it. But eventually I just decided to force it all the way to the other end. After the lever was pushed to the proper end it came off just as described and the rest was quick.

Thanks!
