Entry door handle - thumb press not working

I have a solid brass front door handle with a thumb press latch that is always in the down position. It's very ornate and original to the house, so I'd like to keep it. Any ideas on what is causing the thumb latch to not go up/down? Is this a repair that requires a locksmith?

Latch

Lubricate the problem area.

Why not just remove it and figure out what's going on inside.

Is the door unlatched when the button is in the depressed position? If not there may be something broken inside the lock. You may have to break out the screwdriver and get dirty.

The thumb latch feature on older handleset mortise locks were never terribly efficient....it was usuallthe second thing to fail (after the inner knob would come loose due to inadequate set screw issues).

When you take it apart, you may discover the wear surfaces have worn beyond repair, and/or the tab return spring has broken or jumped out of place. At any rate, grease the wear surfaces well and this may be all you need if nothing appears to be broken.
