Deadbolt lock opens with handle in any snub position

please help asap, I have a few hours to solve this, I have to leave soon and the door is unlocked.

I'm renting someone's house for a week and I went out to smoke and pressed some latch so that I don't get locked out. now, no matter what I try - the door opens from outside with the turn of the handle

I'm going to add pics in a minute

this is abloy 4190, automatic deadbolt lock

I pressed the small latch on the bottom and it made the middle latch pop out somewhat. after this I can't get it to lock, it's opened by handle from outside no matter what I try

From the inside, rotate the door handle and press the switch above the latch down. That should restore the locking feature to the outside latch.

but down is unlocking it, no?
and I tried, maybe didn't do right but no luck
I can't rotate the handle from the inside, I can only push down
if you mean the locking switch from the inside - I can only rotate to the right and to the left, not the full turn

here is a video of the tries

Unlock the door from the knob on the inside so you can rotate the handle down and the plunger pulls back in the frame. With it in that position, move the switch above the latch downward, then release the handle.

and afterwards? because in the down position the door can be unlocked from the outside, which is what it's doing now. afterwards put it up again?

OK, what "some" latch did you press to keep from getting locked out?

It looked as if when the switch I referred to is in the up position and you press the bottom button you could not retract the latch with the outside handle. Isn't that what you are looking for?

I'm an idiot. please forget the whole thing. I don't know whether what you had me do fixed it or it was never broken

I don't know how these locks work, so I thought that the fact that the handle turns on the outside means it's unlocked but it's not. once the door is locked, even if I can turn the handle I can't open the door
I'm from NYC, our doors (that's I've seen) don't work that way. I just can't turn the knob, at all. here it's a different story

thank you!!!!!

Possible the door needs to be in the fully closed position. The lower plunger under the main latch needs to be compressed in for the door to operate

LOL - how do you think we gained all our knowledge? We all learn by trial and error sometimes. The difference is that we have been in so many houses and have a better chance of encountering all these oddities. Something to laugh about at the next family gathering.

it's true but I still feel stupid every time it happens but in a funny way )))

also, what an amazing feeling once you realize you don't have a problem anymore, whether you fixed it or it fixed itself. my job is very much about solving problems. I especially love those that I work at for days, try different things, post at every forum I know. and then, when it finally works - what a feeling!!!

Many locks nowadays have the "clutch" feature, wherein when locked, the outer lever still operates but does not retract the latch. It is to prevent forced entry by striking the lever with a hammer or such.
